"How To" Guides for Verizon FiOS

Setting up a Verizon FiOS router

  1. Connect to the router by entering its IP-based URL in your web browser's address field:
                                  http://192.168.1.1/

192.168.1.1 is the first class C IP address for internal networks.
  2. Enter the Administrator's user name and password:

                               User Name: admin

    Password: password

The default password may be password or password1.

  3. Review the other configuration settings and make any changes as necessary.

Optional steps

The following sections apply to the Adaptec routers used by Verizon.

Setting up DNS on your home network

Using your web browser, connect to the router's administration port by entering the router's IP address (196.168.1.1). Select Advanced then System Settings and set the Wireless Broadband Router's Hostname. Since the default is Wireless_Broadband_Router, you may want to make it something shorter, such as router. Set the Local Domain also. If you have your own domain name for your "global" network, you can use a subdomain such as FleetStreet.ExampleOnly.com for the local network, as recommended in Naming the Network and the Nodes on the Network.

Setting up Router Notifications

  1. Set up the outgoing mail server

Using your web browser, connect to the router's administration port by entering the router's IP address (196.168.1.1). Select Advanced then System Settings and set the Outgoing Mail Server settings:

    Server
This is the IP address or host name of your mail server. It could be the address of your outgoing mail server, or the address of the mail server for the destination mailbox.
    From E-mail Address
This will be the e-mail address put into the From header of the message. It could be the same as the host name of the router, with the period between the subdomain and the second level domain changed to an @, for example:
                                           router.FleetStreet@ExampleOnly.com

    Port
This is the mail server's SMTP port, which is probably 25.
  2. Set up e-mail notifications from the router

Back at the Main screen of the router's administration service, select Quick Links then Change Login User Name / Password. Under E-Mail Notification, enter the address where the notifications are to be sent in the Notification Address field and select the desired notification levels.
