How to comment on podcasts

When you reply to a podcaster, whether by e-mail or voice message, try to follow these guidelines:

• If the podcasts are sequentially numbered, reference the show number in your message. It may also help to mention what the elapsed time counter showed during the portion of the original podcast being commented on. This information not only helps the podcaster determine exactly what content you are commenting on, but also lets them know that you had actually listened to their podcast and are not just sending messages to a bunch of podcasters at random in hopes of getting mentioned in their podcast or notes. (Some podcasts report getting four or more "spam" comments for each good one.) It also helps other listeners, who may have missed that part of the original podcast, by allowing them to easily find the location of the information being commented on.
• When leaving comments in a voice message, be sure to include your contact information. If this is included either at the beginning or the end of the message, it will be easier for the podcaster to edit them out.
• Recognize that podcast articles and comments may need to be edited by podcasters due to time constraints in the same way that newspaper articles are edited due to limited print space. Therefore, put the most important stuff near the beginning of your message and less important information toward the end of the message.
