"How To" Guides for Cell Phones

Changing phones without changing providers

Changing cell phones without changing providers is a simple matter if the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) can be moved from one phone to the other:

  1. Put the battery in the new phone and plug it in until fully charged. You might as well be able to test and use the phone after the switchover.
  2. Display each of the phone book entries in the old phone. If any of the entries are stored in the "Phone" save them in the "SIM" instead. Note that this will transfer the telephone numbers, but some other information, such as voice recognition dialing and picture caller id associations, will probably be lost.
  3. Remove the batteries from both phones to expose their SIM slots.
  4. Move the SIM from the old phone to the new phone.
  5. Replace the battery in the new phone and turn on the power.
  6. Display the phone book to make sure the entries were successfully moved.
  7. Try making a call to make sure the network still recognizes the subscriber information.
